An authorized tie-in to the popular TV show “Criminal Minds”

Most episodes of CBS’s Criminal Minds series feature a briefing where the profiling team defines the type of criminal they are looking for by examining behavior patterns that were established in actual criminal cases. In this authorized companion to the hit TV series, you’ll learn how real-life criminals committed their unspeakable crimes and follow the investigators who finally tracked them down. Mariotte explains why and how profilers organize major offenders into types and why each of these perpetrators falls into a particular category. You’ll get the stories behind:

Solo serial killers, such as David Berkowitz, Zodiac, and Henry Lee Lucas

Sexual predators who preyed on women and girls, such as Dennis Rader and Gary Ridgway, and those who preyed on men and boys, such as John Wayne Gacy

Parallel to the film career for which he is justly admired, David Lynch (born 1946) has always worked as an artist, having trained in painting at the Corcoran School of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the mid-1960s. Lynch’s photographs, paintings, prints, drawings, and more recently, musical compositions, are an indispensable part of his oeuvre and frequently a source of inspiration for his films. Fans of such classics as “Blue Velvet,” “Wild at Heart,” “Twin Peaks” and “Mulholland Drive” will readily conjure the director’s keen eye for lush but menacing neo-Surrealist tableaux, for instance, which are directly nourished by his artworks. Other hallmarks of the Lynchian style, such as cryptic messages and inscriptions, foreboding atmospherics and a famously left-field sense of humor likewise appear in the paintings, drawings and photographs collected in “David Lynch: Dark Splendor”–a landmark publication that reveals the breadth and accomplishment of his work in this realm. It contains such marvels as his matchbook drawings–pen-and-ink images of shrouded dreamscapes and interiors, inscribed on the inside of matchbooks–his wonderfully foreboding lithographs, in which scrawled captions jostle among murky figures, his photographs of industrial wastelands and his sinister paintings that incorporate materials and objects to further advance their gothic appeal. “Dark Splendor” presents these works in excellent reproductions, and will seduce fans of contemporary film and art alike.

With his critically acclaimed “Rip It Up and Start Again,” renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds applied a unique understanding to an entire generation of musicians working in the wake of punk rock. Spawning artists as singular as Talking Heads, Joy Division, The Specials, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Gang of Four, and Devo, postpunk achieved new relevance in the first decade of the twenty-first century through its profound influence on bands such as Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, and Vampire Weekend.
With “Totally Wired” the conversation continues. The book features thirty-two interviews with postpunk’s most innovative personalities–such as Ari Up, Jah Wobble, David Byrne, and Lydia Lunch–alongside an “overview” section of further reflections from Reynolds on postpunk’s key icons and crucial scenes. Included among them are John Lydon and PIL, Ian Curtis and Joy Division, and art-school conceptualists and proto-postpunkers Brian Eno and Malcolm McLaren. Reynolds follows these exceptional, often eccentric characters from their beginnings through the highs and lows of postpunk’s heyday.
Crackling with argument and anecdote, “Totally Wired” paints a vivid portrait of individuals struggling against the odds to make their world as interesting as possible, in the process leaving a legacy of artistic ambition and provocation that reverberates to this day.

In 1979, Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn set about establishing a complete list of the group’s live appearances from 1957 through 1966, when they stopped giving concerts; the research took seven long years and was published as the book “The Beatles Live! “Shortly thereafter, EMI Records invited Lewisohn to be the only person outside of the Beatles and their production staff to go into Abbey Road and listen to the entire collection of Beatles session tapes and to interview practically everyone involved in their making. The result was published in 1988 as “The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, “and sold over 150,000 copies. This book artfully combines and updates all the vital material in Lewisohn’s earlier two books with his definitive account of the Beatles’ work in radio, television, film, and video to create a complete day-by-day summary of the group’s entire oeuvre. First published in 1992, “The Complete Beatles Chronicle “has become the Beatles Bible, the one book no fan can live without, and a perfect companion to the bestselling “Beatles Anthology, “which recounted their story in their own words.

For centuries musicians have tapped into mysticism, magic and alchemy, embracing ritual, spell, incantation and prayer, and experimenting with esoteric approaches to harmony, pitch and vibration. In recent decades, avant-garde musicians have rediscovered these overlaps, as occultism has reinvented itself–through Buddhist and other Asian influences, Thelema and Chaos Magic–to accommodate cultural strains from psychedelica through Punk and Industrial music. This special edition of John Zorn’s much acclaimed “Arcana” series focuses on the magical aspects of the act of making music. Neither historical overview nor musicological study, it illuminates the sympathies between music and the esoteric tradition with the help of today’s finest experimental musicians and occultists. Among these are William Breeze, Gavin Bryars, Alvin Curran, Fred Frith, Sharon Gannon, Larkin Grimm, William Kiesel, Yusef Lateef, Frank London, Meredith Monk, Mark Nauseef, Pauline Oliveros, Genesis P-Orridge, Terry Riley, David Toop, Greg Wall, Peter Lamborn Wilson and Z’ev.
